TWO CARBON MONOXIDE INCIDENTS IN TEN HOURS

At 0003 New Canaan Fire units were dispatched to 15 Hillside Ave. for smoke in the house. Car 1 Engine 1 and Ladder 3 responded with 7. Engine 1 arrived to find a 2 story structure with nothing showing and established Hillside command. When crews entered the structure they encountered a smoke condition and high levels of carbon monoxide 170 PPM. Crews quickly traced the problem to the homes oil burner which was shut off by firefighters. Fire crews set up multiple fans and ventilated the structure. The occupants of the home showed signs of possible carbon monoxide poisoning and were transported to Norwalk Hospital by New Canaan EMS. Capt. Petrone had Hillside command. At 0901 Engine 1 and Ladder 3 were dispatched to 70 Main St. for the activated commercial fire alarm. Engine 1 arrived to find a two story commercial building with nothing showing from the outside. When crews entered the building they found a light haze and high levels of carbon monoxide 175 PPM. Fire crews advised the occupants to evacuate the building. The source of the problem was located in the basement where contractors were using a gas-powered saw to cut a concrete wall. The building was ventilated and crews returned to service within the hour.
