At 1511 NCFD units were dispatched to 468 South Avenue at the Saxe Middle School for a mercury spill inside the structure. Engine 4 Rescue 5 Car 3 and Fire Marshall 1 responded with 8 personnel . Once on scene crews discovered a small amount of mercury that spilled from an old piece of medical equipment in a classroom. Over the course of the incident several people were exposed to the product including members of NCVAC and their ambulance. The Fairfield County HAZ-MAT team was requested to the scene along with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. New Canaan crews secured a perimeter and set up a decontamination area while the HAZ-MAT team metered the vicinity inside the school as well as those who were exposed to the mercury. An environmental cleanup company was called to the scene at which point all fire personnel and apparatus cleared.
