BUSY AFTERNOON PEAKS WITH: CAR VS. MOOSE ON THE MERRITT PARKWAY, INCLUDING EXTRICATION
After spending most of the morning at a transformerbrush fire and responding on a few other alarms New Canaans Bravest were alerted to Route 15 southbound for a MVA w extrication reported Car vs. Moose. Yes a Moose A moose had been roaming Fairfield County for the past few days and drivers had been warned on morning radio that it may be in the vicinity of the Merritt Parkway. At 348 pm Engine 4 Rescue 5 Utility 1 NCVAC 350 351 NCPD CSP and the Game Commission were alerted to the area of exit 37 southbound. Minutes later Engine 4 arrived on scene and reported a one car MVA versus a moose with entrapment. Within minutes the driver was extricated and placed in the care of the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance CorpsNCVAC. Because of the severity of the accident Connecticut State Police closed the road for the next two hours and conducted a thorough investigation. The patient in the vehicle suffered head trauma and was transported to Norwalk Hospital on a priority. After tracking the moose for several days it was determined by the Environmental Police that the moose would not continue his journey across Southwestern Connecticut any longer. Engine 4 had the Merritt Parkway command.While on scene Engine 4 Rescue 5 Utility 1 and NCVAC were alerted to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the area of Gods Acre. Because Engine 4 and NCVAC were committed to the parkway Utility 1 Rescue 5 and Norwalk EMS responded and handled the call. When all was said and done fire department units were back in quarters just after 6 pm.
