Press Release

Where’s the Fire?

We have all been there – driving to an unfamiliar area and trying to find a given address. If you know the name and it is on the mailbox then you might be able to find your destination. But, if there is no name or street number on the mail box or house, how do you know if you are at the right place? Where are you? Where is the house? This sounds like a simple question but, in an emergency it can be the difference between life and death.

Put yourself in the emergency responder’s role – Police, Fire or EMS – and see how difficult the task becomes. Having your street/house number clearly posted so that emergency responders can easily find your home is critical and it is something that you have to do. If you have a long, shared driveway, directional signs are a must. Precious time is lost every day when Public Safety Personnel try to locate an address and all they see are blank mailboxes staring back at them. If there is a number on the box and/or house then their job is much easier and you get the help you need faster.

Please clearly post your street numbers on the mailbox – preferably with 4” high, contrasting numbers. If you have any questions about how to mark your home please call the New Canaan Fire Marshal’s Office at 594-3030.

Cold water - ice Rescue

Today the Fire Company, joined by New Canaan EMS, did a cold water - ice rescue drill at Mead pond.
It is a good and fun winter drill. You never know when we might be called upon to rescue a person or animals that get trapped in waterways around town in both warm and cold weather. A tricky operation, especially in cold weather when ponds freeze and victims get stuck on or worse fall through weak ice.
We used the cold weather and icy conditions today to give our your newer members a chance to don the rescue suits and practice rescuing the less than cooperative victims out on the ice. Sporting the highly fashionable classic “Gumby” suits more experienced members plaid victims and alternate rescuers. In all a good day to practice rescue operations, including Ice rescue, triangulate victim location, throw bag drills and both rescue strap and stokes basket victim retrieval. It was great to have EMS with us to cover more patient/victim treatment and discussions on best ways to treat, move and transfer victims from the hot zone to the bus.

Thank you @newcanaanems for helping us out today! We look forward to do more combined drills with you.

When it snows please dig us out!

If you take a couple of minutes to clear the snow away from you local hydrant when it snows, you can help save precious time in case we need to use it to fight a fire. There is a large number of hydrants in town, it takes a while for your Firefighters to drive around to dig them all out! Please consider digging out the one closest to your house. I dug my local hydrant out this morning, is yours still buried in snow?

Stay safe and warm !

Where is the traffic cone?

Another good Sunday morning driver /operator training. This morning we took Engine 1 and Ladder 3 out for driver training and had everyone practice their precision and smooth aerial operation with the cone challenge!

We tied a traffic cone to the tip of the aerial with a short rope, hanging a couple of feet down from the top rung. A spot where you can not see it clearly from the turntable controls.
The objective was to either place the cone, gently on top of a light pole quite a distance away up high or stack it on top of another cone on the ground 85-90+ feet away. To do this the operator has to exercise smooth soft touch on the controls while keeping an eye on all obstructions. In addition as you can not see everything, including sometimes the cone, the operator and spotter have to work well together to place the aerial in the right spot before delivering the cone where it needs to go.

It’s is precision work as a small harsh movement gets the cone swinging wild or you risk banging the ladder into obstructions.

if you live in New Canaan or within five miles of the town line and are interested in precision cone placing and other firefighting activities send us a note. We are always looking for new members. recruiting@newcanaanfire.com
