New Canaan Fire Co., No. 1

Earlier this week we took advantage of being able to use a structure scheduled for demolition for some ventilation and overhaul training for our probationary members. It was a great opportunity for our probies to get a realistic feel for roof ventilation using both a saw and a flat headed axe, as sometimes the saw won’t cooperate and might work. Takings turn on the roof and going inside to practice looking for extension by both opening ceiling and walls using a pike pole or newyorker. The more senior members attending got some extra practice as well. Great training for all, especially the newer members whom had not done this before.

Thank you to Steven Kryger for some of the pictures.

Sunday morning hose and iron work!
Last Sunday we were lucky to have access to a structure where we were able to give our newest members a chance to get more realistic hands on hose and door breaching training. For some it was the first time they handled and advanced with a charged hose line or breached a door using the irons.

The best training is when you can do it in a realistic environment. Getting a charged hose line up regular stairs can be a challenge, getting it up through narrow stairs and around tight corners to reach a second floor fire is even more exiting. These guys did great. After three evolutions with a charged line, they got to learn how to drain and repack the cross lay.

Still full of energy they practiced breaching two different doors in tight quarters, getting a realistic feel how you can’t expect to have optimal access or space to a door you need to get open.

Over all a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours on a nice Sunday morning.

If you are in or near New Canaan and would like to join us we are always looking for more members. Send us a note if you like to find out more. recruiting@newcanaanfire.com

Threading the needle!

We are lucky to have a gorgeous old firehouse, on Main Street right downtown in New Canaan. But did you know that unlike with modern firehouses we literally only have inches to spare on each side when getting the fire trucks in and out of the bays. If you are couple of inches off the line you might have to reset and try again or risk hitting something. Especially with the Long ladder truck. It literally blocks both lanes of traffic before you can turn the wheel when when exiting or lining up to back back in to it’s pigeon hole.

If you ever wonder why we block traffic on Main Street and the Main / Locust av corner for what seems a while when returning the trucks back to the Firehouse, that is why. It is amazing to see how smoothly some of the operators thread that needle when backing the rigs back in to that tight space in one try.

So when you see us blocking traffic to back in, take a moment to observe those operators show their skill and be patient in case we don’t make it in one try! We prefer taking the extra time to avoid damaging our beautiful Firehouse or the expensive fire Apparatus.
